Set in India's heartland, the state of Madhya Pradesh has
a history that spans centuries of rulers and religions. Madhya
Pradesh, by virtue of its location on India's oldest geographical
feature, is home to cave paintings from the Paleolithic/ Stone
Age. These cave paintings at Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh, are
at least as old as the prehistoric cave paintings found in
the Pyreness mountain range on the southwest border of France
and Spain (12,000 years).
Before princely states under British Rule in central India
came together to form the state of Madhya Pradesh in 1956,
the region now known as Madhya Pradesh had under the influence
of Buddhist, Hindu, Jain and Mughal dynasties. The first documented
evidence of Madhya Pradesh's past dates back to 3rd century
BC.
From the Mauryas (Emperor Ashoka), Sungas, Guptas, Hans,
Parmanas (Raja Bhoj) and Chandalas to the divide and rule
policies of Mughals and British, Madhya Pradesh has witnessed
a range of religious and philosophical influences that are
reflected in its temples, culture and people. Sanchi, Khajuraho
and Gwalior are some examples of Madhya Pradesh's amalgamated
cultural heritage.
Madhya Pradesh, then known as Malwa, is largely a flat plateau
with infrequent mountain ranges covered with dense evergreen
forests. Together with the forests in the now separated state
of Chhatisgarh (formed on November 1, 2000), this area in
central India is one of the few remaining thickly forested
regions in India and is home to 22% of the world's tiger population.
These majestic tigers, apart other endangered species, can
be found at any of the four national parks in the state of
Madhya Pradesh - Shivpuri National Park, Bandhavgarh National
Park, Kanha National Park and Panna National Park.
Madhya Pradesh abounds in temples and stupas and like any
state in India, celebrates unique festivals with enthusiasm
and fervor. Khajuraho festival of dance, feast of St Jude,
Shivratri mela are some of the festivals you can watch and
enjoy on your tour of Madhya Pradesh.
Most of the sightseeing places in Madhya Pradesh fall near
and about the Delhi-Mumbai railway line. The state of Madhya
Pradesh, because of its central location in India, is well
connected to all parts of India with all the major trains
stopping over at stations in the major cities and popular
tourist attractions in Madhya Pradesh.
