The 26th state of India, Chhattisgarh was officially created
from Madhya Pradesh on the first of November 2000. Chhattisgarh
is located in India's center and is one of the very few states
in India that doesn't have a sea facing or international border
side.
Flanked by UP and Bihar in the north, Maharashtra and Madhya
Pradesh in the west, Andhra Pradesh in the south and Orissa
in the east; Chhattisgarh is largely a hilly region with dense
evergreen forests and deep river valleys as the mighty Vindhyachal
Range, Narmada and Mahanadi Rivers crisscross through most
of the state in central India.
By virtue of its landlocked location and rugged topography,
for centuries the region in Central India that now forms Chhattisgarh
was part of all the major kingdoms and empires that ran through
the Indian Continent without being affected by their unique
cultural influences. The intriguing customs and traditions of
the scheduled tribes thus, have stood the test of time and are
there for you to see and study on your tour to Chhattisgarh,
then known as Dakshin Khosla.
Chhattisgarh was created to protect the rights of the scheduled
tribes to equality of opportunity and resources that Chhattisgarh
abounds in. The British officials were the first to recognize
Chhattisgarh's abundance in natural resources. To exploit
these very resources that belonged to the indigenous scheduled
tribes, the British Empire established extensive mining and
railway systems that changed the face of Chhattisgarh forever.
Chhattisgarh in Central India is home to the maximum number
of scheduled tribes anywhere within India but its proximity
to so many states has lead to the influx of migrants that form
majority of the population in Raipur, capital of Chhattisgarh.
Today, Chhattisgarh is a leader in electricity generation. It
said that the day Chhattisgarh officially became an independent
state; Madhya Pradesh faced a daylong blackout. Its mining industry
- sponge iron, ferrous alloys, steel re-rolling mills are a
hallmark of the state. The imprint of agriculture, still the
dominant occupation, can be seen everywhere on your tour to
Chhattisgarh.
